The Quest to be Fit

Tracking my journey to better health

Mostly Monday February 16, 2009

Today being a holiday helped it feel not-so-Monday-ish.  I still worked almost a full day, but work didn’t feel too burdensome or boring.  In fact I was consumed by the same case I was working on Friday, but finally got it done.  Allergies have been plaguing me…can we have a hard rain up here already or what?  It seems all of our moisture is heading south to California and causing quite a bit of nastiness all up and down the state.  Hope those of you in California are staying safe, warm, and dry!

I forgot to prep my oats last night, so I packed some cereal and almond milk for breakfast to eat at work:  1 serving Fred Meyer Shredded Wheat with 1 tbsp raisins, and about 3/4 cup of almond milk. Not too shabby!

Around noon Chris wanted to eat, so we sat down and I had a little sando of 1 pc. ww bread with 1/2 wedge LCL and 2 slices peppered turkey; most of a Fuji :); 1 serving Kashi TLC Fire Roasted Vegetable crackers.  I totally forgot greenery at the store, so the sando was lacking vegetable matter completely. Oops.

Work work work, finally finished my case, and rewarded myself with a snack of  1 cup Dannon Light’n’Fit vanilla.  Freddy’s finally had vanilla yesterday, but now I think I may prefer strawberry since its got more goin’ on than the ‘nilla.  We’ll see…’nilla is more versatile and I can mix other stuff into it.

When we got home I started preparing dinner:  sauteed pork chops with steamed broccoli & carrots, and oven fried potatoes.  Trusty favorite these days, and tasty.  It is also voluminous (Erin!)without being heavy or highly caloric.

Random fact of the day for you here:  tradable bonds go all the way back to 1171 in Venice!  Holy shit!  For over 100 years they never missed an interest payment.  That is a long time to have bonds around, and a great track record on defaults.  Me and my financial geekery!

Around 7:30 I headed out to the gym, and did the fitnessmagazine.com Bikini Body Workout:  Compete Cardio and Sculptine Routine.  This was a bit tougher, as between sets I had to do a minute of moderate intensity cardio; I did jump rope and jogging in place.  I think I also mis-read the instructions b/c I did three sets of each move, rather than just 1 minute of it and then moving on to the next.  We’ll see if I am nice and sore from it tomorrow 🙂  I followed this up with 45 moderate minutes on the stair mill.  Oh, the sweaty glory 🙂

Once home a shake was calling my name…”Oh Keeeerrrrstennnn….you know you want me!”  To which I replied, “yes I do!” and proceeded to make a Genisoy Chocolate Protein Shake with chocolate unsweetened almond milk and 1/2 a banana.  SO yummy, rich, and thick!  I like the choc. almond milk since it is a nice tame chocolate taste.  I’ll have to give it a whirl in my cereal or oats, too.

I decided that I hadn’t had quite enough calories, so I had the other half of my nanner and a tiny bit of a.b. as I prepped my oats.

So here we are, the end of the day…. Did you take today off?  Switch up your routine b/c it was a holiday?  Hope you had a great Monday no matter what you did!  Keep it real til next time 🙂

Crazy daze February 13, 2009

Yo yo homies.  I’m feelin’ a little out of it, crazy, and rather daze-y at the moment.  You’ll see why in a moment…

Friday is finally over.  Longer day than I anticipated, less productive than I’d hoped, and now I’m feeling a tad on the lazy side in a guilty way.

Woke up late AGAIN and had my oats at home.  New oats combo!  Instead of raisins I put in 1/2 of a ripe nanner while doing my oats prep last night, and it turned out pretty well.  I’m super picky about bananas, their ripeness, and banana flavored things, so this wasn’t my favorite combo, but it was really good.  Something about bananas gets to me in a bad way once they’re ripe.  Too sweet and gooey!

After breakfast I eventually mosied to work, was busy for awhile, and eventually I was ready to eat.  I think I was more mentally tired and wanted a break, but hunger wasn’t too far off anyway.  Today’s lunch was a little different fo’ sho!  I had:  a piece of whole wheat bread with Maranatha a.b. and raisins (!); and Dannon Light’n’Fit strawberry.  I never ate my apple…

My whole afternoon was consumed by a tough case; I was working on it for what felt like forever.  A little frustrating, but at least I did get somewhere…  I had a snack of Kashi TLC Fire Roasted Vegetable crackers along the way.

Around 6 we called it quits, and guess what Chris mentioned on the way home.  Yes, that’s right, he wanted to go to Mexican again for dinner.  What?  No, you’re crazy, I said.  We already planned to have spaghetti at home and I was going to go work out.  Somehow that all fell apart on the drive home, and I agreed to go but not drink anything so I could still work out.

But, alas, our waiter automatically brought us Casuelas!  What was I to do?  Refuse that pitcher?  So, I drank some and decided I probably wouldn’t end up working out tonight.  I felt bad, but at least I did enjoy the food and beverage.

Now I sit here watching Scarface, fighting off a headache.  I totally shouldn’t have had the booze, as I’m succeptible to a headache right now hormonally.  I also do feel a tad guilty about not working out.  Guess that means I’ll really bust it out tomorrow morning!

Tonight seems like a great opportunity to go to bed a little early 🙂  Chris is already asleep on the couch next to me, and Lily is passed out on her cloud bed 🙂  My cute little family…

Did you all have a good Friday?  Have a great weekend!

Blast off

I looked up a bunch of workout programs today on fitnessmagazine.com and honed in on the following:

  1. The Ultimate Ab Workout Plan (4 weeks long)
  2. Get a Bikini Body in 4 Weeks
  3. Your Flat-Abs Handbook
  4. Lose Every Bulge in 3 Weeks (some Hollywood inspired thing)
  5. Bikini Body Workout:  Complete Cardio and Sculpting Routine

Tonight I did #2 and the first week’s plan for #1.  I am amazed that the moves look easy but are pretty challenging, and left me sweating a bit 🙂  I felt like a total dork at first busting out the routines, but then got the hang of things.  I’m desperate to blast off some calories and flab before leaving for my vacation, so I hope this change of pace kicks my ass into better shape a little faster.  I figured that I should be down about another few pounds by now since I’m three months in to working out and eating less…just more motivation to step it up a bit for the next 5 weeks.

Have any of you done these types of workouts (i.e. 4 wk program/fitness magazine programs) and had good results??  I’d really like to hear your take on them, so please de-lurk and let me know!

The Day’s Eats and Activities

Erin asked a question today about what we do first thing in the morning…today was really bad as I hit the snooze button for like an hour before getting up!!!  And I still wanted to go back to bed after that.

Since I got a late start I ate breakfast at home again and made coffee.  Nummy steel cut oats, raisins, Barney Butter, cinnamon, almond milk, water.

I was busy at work and didn’t end up eating until lunch until about 2.  My wrap was a little different today, and yummy!  Whole wheat tortilla, dried cranberry crusted goat cheese, peppered turkey, romaine.  My Jonagold was pithy again 😦  At least the Kashi TLC were tasty!  I ran out of turkey and romaine so my wrap was a little empty 😦

After busting my ass to get ready for my 4pm meeting I was stood up 😦  Hey, it happens here and there…People get busy and forget about meetings sometimes, esp. when they’re scheduled a quarter in advance.

I guess Chris thought I agreed to go to Mexican again tonight, as he came in to my office around 5 and started speaking of such things.  Say what?  I thought he was crazy, but whatever, I was a kind partner and agreed to go as usual.

We went to Si Senor, where I had a massive Diet Coke, chips & salsa, and one chicken taco.  Simple, tasty, perfect portion size.  ‘Nuf said.

That’s Chris’ huge margarita in the background.

I hit up the gym around 8 and busted out the aforementioned workout, plus a 3-way cardio sesh of 15 minutes of intervals on each the stair mill, elliptical, and treadmill.  I was watching 30 Rock while on the treadmill and laughed out loud a few times…it was so funny!  I don’t watch it that often and was totally amused.

Once home afterward a little shaky-poo was calling my name…

The all-star lineup, posing next to the finished product.  I used 1 cup almond milk, 3+ TBSP shake mix, ~1/2 TBSP Maranatha, and 1/2 a nanner.  SO yummy and satisfying!!!  BTW, I love my Braun hand blender and it’s multiple attachments.  It is powerful and really easy to use, and all the attachments can go right in the dishwasher.

Guess what?!  It’s after midnight, so technically that means it is Friday!!!  Yippee!  This week has gone by pretty slowly; not bad really, just annoying.

What are you all doing for Valentine’s Day?  V-Day is a tough one…so many people get caught up in the perfect gift or the perfect dinner… I like to just focus on those I love 🙂  Chris and I are joining a group of mostly strangers at Typhoon for a multi-course meal.  I’m totally hoping it is just 8 courses of curry and not too much seafood 🙂  I need to get me some curry on a more regular basis!!

Happy Friday to you 🙂  Toodle-oo.
